daninreallife_dvd.jpgAdvice columnist Dan Burns (Steve Carell) is an expert on relationships, but somehow struggles to succeed as a brother, a son and a single parent. Recently widowed, Dan would like to get back into the dating game. Unfortunately, the first woman he falls for is his brother's girlfriend.

Couple that with his teenage daughter's new-found "true" love for a boy that jumps on a bus to see her at her family's get together, an awkward shower scene and bad luck with the local police, and you've got yourself a movie.

DVD Features:

  • Audio commentary with writer/director Peter Hedges
  • Featurette: "Just Like Family: The Making of Dan in Real Life"
  • Featurette: "Handmade Music: Creating the Score"
  • Deleted scenes, with optional commentary
  • Real-Life outtakes
Critique:

Dan in Real Life is a romantic comedy that won't make you gag. The story is sweet, but predictable. The characters are dynamic and believable. The location and the house also work to add to the film's charm.

When you watch this film you get a real sense of family, not one of those box jobs gingerly simulated for the purpose of a theatrical production, but something genuine. Carell gives a great performance as a loving, conflicted father trying to balance his responsibility to his daughters, as well as generate some sort of romantic existence for himself.

The features on this disc are complimentary to the release, containing garden variety cast and crew interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, outtakes, deleted scenes and audio commentary. The Handmade Music featurette is particularly interesting as they discuss the concept of the music being an additional character in the film.

Final Analysis: Dan in Real Life is a charming romantic comedy suitable for guys and gals. A perfect date flick.
