Florida SuperCon: Games that Could be Called Super Print E-mail
Feature Articles - Celebrity Event

gameroom1th.jpgI've seen a lot of things in my life...I've seen Niagara Falls. I've seen a Chicken in a Classroom. I've even seen every single episode of Seinfeld. But none of that (except maybe Seinfeld) could compare to what I saw at the Florida SuperCon.

When I first arrived at the Con, I was blown away. I arrived early and met a couple of celebs. Soon the area became swamped with crazy anime fans. After a while all I saw was Comic Books, Security, Pockey, and Kingdom Hearts...Boy did I see a lot of Kingdom Hearts!

Now on to the main part of this article. I was on a simple mission: the game room. Of course as video games are my passion, I thought I was going to be covering a small room of little crappy arcade games...but I was wrong.

As soon as I entered this blue-lit area I heard some kind of techno beat being blasted from some pretty big speakers. Looking around the room, I could not help but feel a small sense of pride as I recognized about eight different consoles in the room. Now, don't get me wrong, I love the new consoles, but I have to admit I almost hugged the guy behind the counter when I saw an N64 in the back.

I walked slowly towards what was once the basis of my existence, and inside was Mario Cart 64. Recently I rented Mario Cart Wii and was shocked by the beauty of such an amazing game, but missed some things from the original. After crashing on Rainbow Road (five times), I put it down and could not help but think how much harder Mario Cart had gotten after two console generations. As I left the area, I saw someone fumble with the controls of the Naruto Gamecube Game. I sighed and thought ‘one man's trash is another man's treasure'.

I moved across the room, noticing Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4 running on eight TVs. I was disappointed to see that two were broken. I really wanted to try and beat the little kid that was next to me, but couldn't, due to technical difficulties. So, because of the lack of workable TVs, various people's hopes of beating someone at Halo diminished.

I then sat down next to a man who was hogging the Sonic the Hedgehog station. As much as I would have liked to play it on a Genesis, which I hadn't seen in about five years, I would have to wait because I had a challenger for Street Fighter Alpha 2.

The match went by quickly with a win from me and then a win from him. I swiftly took the third round. I still got it! Well, for about two seconds before this other guy sat down. He beat me good. Knowing when I'm out of my league, I smiled. Finally the guy playing Sonic the Hedgehog left and I was free to take over the machine.

After blowing through a couple of levels, and playing with my favorite hedgehog, I couldn't help but notice the large crowd growing a couple of TVs down. I rose and approached, and then saw a new friend.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl...I was instantly awed by it's perfection. (If you don't know what Super Smash Bros. Brawl is check my review on it here ). The guys playing were obviously the kind of guys that go and play at tournaments, because there were no items and they played on the same stage every time. I took the high road, and...Who am I kidding I can't resist a challenge. I sat down and whooped three of them with a newer Sonic than I was just playing with before. I started leaving as their jaws dropped.

In another corner some kids were jamming out to Rock Band. I would have joined in on the interesting game, but I'm not gonna lie and say it's an easy game, and unless I'm with friends that can video tape me and put my embarrassment on youTube, no thanks.

So what did we learn today?

A. Awesome Games will most likely remain awesome, but will probably change by the time the next one comes out.

B. Games that suck will always suck, no matter what the platform.

C. You can't beat everyone at every game, find one you're good at.

D. Sonic Rules.
