Along the hallway of the Hyatt Regency convention center were numerous comic artist tables in a trail beginning at the SuperCon's entrance and spreading out toward the main exhibition rooms.

Within the array of creative expression, there were two young men, Joel Estrada and Deleon Walters, whose art caught my attention so quickly that I laughed, smiled, and then stopped to check out the rest of their work.

Friends for several years, Deleon and Joel have collaborated many times before, including the two prints I admired at the Florida SuperCon in Weston.

The print on the left held up by Joel is called In Memoriam. It commemorates and features the tombstones of fallen heroes: Sonic the Hedgehog, Mega Man and Star Fox. Behind the tombstones stand three mourners: the classic icon Mario and latest heavy hitters, Kratos from God of War and Master Chief from Halo.

Looking for the deeper meaning Joel might say, "It's kind of sad what they've done to these once great characters. Sega killed Sonic, Capcom killed Mega Man, and Nintendo doesn't give a damn about Star Fox. All great characters that aren't getting the games they deserve." This is so true. He comments further about this on his Deviant Art page.

The line art was done by Deleon and the color scheme by Joel.

The other print Deleon is holding (on the right) is called Zelda Bathroom. Link, Tingle, and Ganondorf are at the urinals. What is both clever and humorous about it is the sign held above Link's and Tingle's head: All Employees Must Wash Hands Between Load Screens.

It was only after I had seen these two large prints that they told me the FSC guide's cover in my hands was actually created by them! It all transpired when Deleon was invited to the Anime SuperCon in Davie earlier in the year, where Mike Broder had seen their In Memoriam print. He liked it so much that he asked them to design the convention guide cover for the Florida Supercon.

The concept of the cover illustrates the characters whose voice actors were special guests appearing at the SuperCon. In a clockwise rotation, we have Jem from Jem & the Hologram, Batman, Batou from Ghost in the Shell, Lion-O from Thundercats, Spiderman, one of the Weasley twins and Seamus Finnigan from Harry Potter, Azula from Avatar, Aqua Teen Hunger Force's Master Shake (GTA IV loading girl style), and Monkey Woman from Sci-fi's Who wants to be a Superhero?

Joel and Deleon presented these characters in a collage format and placed them in Florida locations. You'll notice that Batou and Azula are ready for action on South Beach!

Want to see more? Check out the gallery in their Deviant Art page.

Attending the Anime SuperCon this November 7-9? There is a good chance you'll run into Deleon and Joel, because they will definitely be there.

By the way Halo fans, the voice of Master Chief, Steven Downes, will be making his first guest appearance at the Anime SuperCon.
