Saving Abel Has a "New Tattoo" for You Print E-mail
Interviews - Band/Musician

ImageI recently had the chance to catch up with Saving Abel.  We had the chance to talk between sound check and show time, and then briefly after the show before they had to leave for their next performance.

Their crowd pleasing set included eight songs: the infamous current hit "Addicted", a rousing version of "New Tattoo", and  "Get Out of My Face", which must have touched off issues with someone in the crowd since there was a bar fight brewing in the corner mid-way through that one.

They also performed "18 Days", and took a moment to pay homage to the troops, a cause they support. When I asked about any causes they were trying to bring attention to, that was one they all agreed on. "We are humbled by the praise we get from returned military. They have been on the front lines and come back and tell us we are great. That blows me away. They are putting it all on the line, then telling us how much we mean to them." Included on their My Space is a video for "18 Days" created by a fan that pays tribute to the troops.

When I asked them if there was a message they wanted to share with fans and potential fans the response was:  "Check out their songs, and they would love to see you at a show."

At the moment they are focusing on the current tour and waiting for the release of other singles on the debut album. Up and coming are"18 Days", "New Tattoo" and "Get Out of My Face".  The self-titled debut disc has done fabulous on the charts thus far.

Saving Abel is, of course, continuing to write new songs; a process, they explain, that's easier thanks to the recent addition of the tour bus. Since being saved from the over-cramped evils of ‘the Van' they can now actually pull out some instruments and work out tunes during their travel time.

Since I had the opportunity to checkout their new wheels, I can understand their excitement. They were gracious enough to invite me aboard and make me feel at home, even giving me a seat with a good view of the big HDTV (with vintage Tom Petty video included).

Why they are still sometimes late for bus call is probably fan related. They spend time at shows getting to know their fans after performances. In conjunction with the tour there are selected Denny's All Nights events that will continue during the Puddle of Mudd tour leg; check out their My Space for upcoming dates.  While you're there you can view the tattoos their fans have gotten.  Temporary band logo tats are available at the shows, but some folks have gotten various designs done permanently.

When I asked about any wild or interesting road stories they were willing to share, Eric brought up the tazer incident. Definitely a "don't try this at home stunt".  Apparently the boys managed to ‘borrow' a security tazer and dared Scott to get tazed. Of course there was video involved, but unfortunately the camera cut off at the same time the shock hit his body.

Never fear though, they decided to try it again. As they were telling me the story I kind of wrote it off to guy stuff, until we got to the part where they wanted to try it again... that is when I really started questioning his sanity, and how much his band mates actually like him. Overall though, they were a cool bunch of guys to hang out with.
