The music on the album is as vibrant and fun as the cover, where Perry poses as the “pin-up poster dream”. On this record, she sings about wanting to be. Her lyrics are chock full of such gems as “just double dawg dare me” and “voted most likely to end up on the back of a milk box drink” and “I lost my fake ID but you lost the motel key.” In fact, all of the tracks on this album are far cleverer than they might appear to be at first listen. Which is not to imply that you would not enjoy that first listen: the music may be very mainstream, but it is extremely catchy and it is certainly louder and gutsier than almost all of the rest of the pop-y music clogging the Z100 radio waves today—and at least it's much worthier of your attention. The title track is certainly the standout, and its brilliant lyrics, as well as the high-energy howling of the chorus, get the album off to a great start. The third track is “Waking Up in Vegas”, which is catchy and loud and memorable for its subject matter alone, but Perry is at her best when she slows it down, for perhaps her two best tracks on the album: the plaintive “Thinking of You”; and “Lost”, the singing of which causes Perry to sound heartbreakingly, well...lost. Is One of the Boys a good, honest rock album? No, of course not. As I have already said, it is mainstream. But if you have the patience for a little good old purely pink punk-y pop-y fun, you will love the hell out of Katy Perry and her music. This Reviewer's Rating: 5 / 5

Although the title of Katy Perry’s debut album is One of the Boys, and although she has a penchant for crude language and for very loud volumes, it is doubtful the world will ever see her as such. According to the record’s title song, on which Perry wails, “I just wanna be one of the girls,” she is probably not going to mind.
