The makers of Casshern provide a well developed, but violent look at a future that is disturbing. I found the animation to be stunning and the characters interesting. Intended for gamers 12 to 17, this flick"s plot provides the most fun when it"s ‘out of control'.
Set in the late 21st century, Earth is in crisis and the future of mankind is at risk. Hope lies in a geneticist’s discovery of a “neo-Cell” which can rejuvenate the human body, but it is used by an evil corporation to create a race of mutants bent on the annihilation of humanity. When a powerful warrior, Casshern, emerges in the battle against this new menace, a hope for a new world begins.
The plot starts out both interesting and intriguing, but dwindles as it nears a resolve. The redeeming factor comes with the steady addition of the characters as they are developed within the storyline leading to the formation of the forces that will stand up in the battle against the evil corporation. The Neo-sapiens, created from the “neo-cell” discovery, are at the focal point with their leader Sagure being the most powerful.
Wonderfully animated with amazing backgrounds and specialized spaceships, to adults the film becomes more of a mesmerizing work of art rather than entertainment. This is definitely for the X-Box game player to watch when they are not mowing down aliens.
There are no added special features. The film is in Japanese with English subtitles.
FINAL ANALYSIS: An action oriented, animated flick with an overabundance of character buildup that would probably entertain most gaming males.
