The 22nd Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival is in full swing with shows planned for nearly 200 independent features and shorts. Stars, directors, producers and filmmakers will be on hand at most of the showings.

The longest festival on record, this year"s fest has something for everyone. Whether you are a college student, film buff or just have interest in the Indies, the opportunity for locals and visitors spool out until November 11th.

The major plus for this festival is the participation of college and high school students who have entered the annual Kodak Student Film Competition. Colleges and High Schools from all over the country vie in different categories for top awards and grants.

This year’s festival has over 200 entries as Short Narratives, Animated, or Documentary. Colleges as notable as UCLA, New York University, USC, University of Colorado, Texas University, Syracuse University, Arizona State University, and Florida’s University of Miami are but a few participating this year.

Among the Florida high schools participating are the Hebrew Academy of Miami and the Dr. Phillips High School of Orlando. The student film finalists will be shown on November 5 at 1:00 p.m. in the Miniaci Theatre, on the Nova Southeastern University campus. The showing is free for everyone.

In the Documentary category, do not miss The Hidden Children, the hair-raising stories of four Jewish children that were secretly hidden from the Nazis during WWII. The film follows their stories of narrow escapes, incredible adventures and great heroism. There will be a special guest appearance by Peter Feigl, one of the survivors. The screening will be on November 6 at 3:00 p.m. at the Miniaci Theatre on Nova Southeastern University campus.

Other notable Documentary selections are The Business of Being Born (USA) on November 4 and 10, Shake Off (Netherlands) on October 27, Back To Our Roots (USA) on October 27, Chops (USA) on November 7, A Dream In Doubt (USA) on November 5, Deep Sea Blues (USA) November 1, Keepers of Eden (Ecuador & USA) on November 1, Justice Louis Brandeis: The People’s Attorney (USA) November 5, and Granny Goes to Washington (USA) November 5.

Popular to the festival are films made in Florida. Some of the movies that are still available at press time are: Underwater: The Making Of The Key West Nutcracker on November 4, On The Job Training on October 27 and 31, Elixir on October 30, Exploring Love on October 26 and Wrath Of Gods on November 3.

There are several World Premieres, USA premiers, free children’s films and 27 short films selected from thousands of entries. Tickets can be purchased on a per film or festival fast pass basis.
