Rated: Unrated
Starring: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Directed by: Peter Bogdanovich
Synopsis: Want to know what a real rock group looks and sounds like? Then watch the documentary Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: Runnin' Down a Dream. Learn how the band was formed and the various names the band chose (like Mudcrutch) before coming up with the one they're known for: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
Watch history while it was being made with live footage of the band as they grew up, saw the world, learned the ways of the music business, as well as the trials, tribulations and setbacks they had along the way.
DVD Features:
Discs One & Two: 240-minute documentary showcasing the beginning of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers until last year's 30th anniversary celebration concert in Gainesville, Florida.
Disc Three: The 30th anniversary celebration concert in Gainesville, Florida.
Disc Four: Bonus Soundtrack CD featuring nine of their best songs.
Critique: Watching the first two discs, I was kept in rapt attention the entire way through. There are so many things that are less-known facts—it is great to finally hear and learn about them.
The way the documentary is put together is a work of art. There are interviews with all members of the band, along with others like George Harrison, Ringo, Eddie Vedder and Johnny Depp.
Watch disc one and disc two simultaneously so as not to miss a moment. If there is a need for any sort of break, hit the pause button, because there is sure to be an intriguing bit of information waiting for your return.
The third disc is absolutely amazing. It's what a real rock band looks like, with real rock band sounds in concert. Honorary Heartbreakers member Stevie Nicks makes a few special appearances throughout the concert.
Anyone who likes Tom Petty and/or rock 'n roll needs this documentary/concert DVD/bonus album added to their collection.
