Critique:
In the Land of Women is a quirky comedy/drama flick, taking us on a ride through the eyes of Carter (Brody)—a professional writer—of soft porn...
After his famous girlfriend Sophia breaks up with him he decides it is time for a little escape from reality. He grabs his stuff and heads for grandma's place. Of course, his grandma is not the cookie-baking, warm and fuzzy type. She walks around half naked and talks about her imminent death with almost every breath.
Family isn't the only off-setter in this film. Carter's neighbors are entertaining as well. Whether he is walking the dog and sharing a snog or two with the mom (Ryan)—or the daughter for that matter—there is always something going on with the Hardwickes.
Think all that sounds weird? Well, that is actually what makes this story interesting. Carter's play with mother and daughter leaves the viewer feeling as if they have been shoved in a washer and set to spin. I could go into this long, drawn-out explanation as to WHY these things happened the way they did, but that is better left for each individual viewer to discern.
The acting for this production is adequate, nothing particularly outstanding, nor atrocious. It is what it is—a feel-good movie with sprinkled humor and life lessons. Not a bad way to spend a Sunday afternoon...
