The swinging 70s comes to DVD this November 20! Love American Style was a hit comedy showcase of hour-long episodes comprised of a series of unrelated short stories about love, sex and romance.
DVD Features:
3-disc set featuring 37 segments from the first 17 episodes of the series
Full Screen Format
Critique:
Love American Style ran on network television from 1969 to 1974, during which time it spent two years on Friday night’s prime time line-up, winning two Emmy Awards and receiving four other nominations.
Each episode featured an average of three vignettes about dating, love and marriage, seasoned with measures of naughty and nice, all served with a healthy side of humor. In some ways, the series seems a bit dated to watch today, it was considered a bit racy in the era of its origin and should still entertain the modern viewer.
One of the nicest things about Love American Style was the incredible array of talent that appeared on the series. Although some actors appeared in more than one episode over the course of the series' five-year run, the only recurring “character” was a large brass bed featured prominently in many episodes.
The cast list throughout the life of the show includes many well-known names (Sonny and Cher, Burt Reynolds, Flip Wilson, Regis Philbin to name just a few), even a very young Harrison Ford appeared in one of the episodes on this first set.
The biggest surprise in this set was the lack of any of the special features that DVD consumers have come to expect when their favorite films and shows are released for home viewing. It does still allow for scene selection; viewers can choose the segment to watch from any of the hour-long episodes.
Overall, Love American Style, Season One, Volume One, may be more appreciated by older viewers who are nostalgic for the past, but it is still good entertainment that is generally suitable for the whole family.
