Critique:
For a movie sporting some of Sci Fi's finest actors, somehow I thought there would be more. While the acting of Nathan Fillion and Katee Sackhoff are top notch as expected, the story itself left something to be desired. There just wasn't enough meat for either of them to sink their teeth into.
The visuals were great, but the entire premise behind the story never really came together in the end. What does happen when you save someone's life that is supposed to die after the third day and why? Even though the writer shoots out hints here and there about this supernatural no-no, nothing tangible ever really explains anything. I still don't get it...maybe I missed something...perhaps I should watch it a third time. I wonder what will happen if I watch the movie a third time. Hopefully I won't go on a killing spree for no apparent reason...
The extras on the DVD were satisfactory. The Making of featurette was the most interesting of the bunch. While the Exploring the Near-Death Experience feature was meant to help further evidence behind the storyline, I felt it took away from it somewhat. There were the same few people talking about easily explained phenomena, quickly debunked on a scientific level by anyone that knows the process a body goes through when dying or rebooting so to speak. It would have been better if they made a real segment that included not only recounts from some people, but also scientific researchers or other information that has already been gathered about the subject.
Journey into Madness is a quick and fun little tour around the "haunted" asylum where they did some of the filming for the movie. Fillion leads us through the rooms and the dark and damp underbelly, complete with lurking hallways and spooky sounds. Reminded me of Ghost Hunters with none of the suspense or night vision...
Final Analysis: A semi-scary movie with some good acting, great visuals and a not-so-great storyline. Perfect stay-in date flick for a rainy day or night.
