Artist: The Switches Album: Drama Queen EP Website: MySpace
The notion of a four piece band that formed in college due
to stalwart passion for a legion of seventies pop-punk lineage that include
10cc, ELO and Bowie isn"t by nature uncommon or even all that exciting (the bassist's ancestor did however invent the bicycle!); but the trippy, infectious
grooves and airy lyrical pastiche of The Switches certainly are, and that"s to
our benefit.
Formed in London, this
four-piece pop/punk band of Brian Wilson and Beatles worshipers seem to go
against the grain of their working class Brit rock/punk contemporaries Artic
Monkeys and Editors, not by singing about cute furry pets and all those good times to
come, but by turning up the glam-pop melodies to eleven.
The first single and title track from the new EP Drama
Queen is a strikingly good example of the latter. It all sounds so fancily
danceable and full of Beach Boys-ish (or more immediately: Dandy Warhols) hand-clapping,
woo-wooing cheerfulness until it becomes apparent you’re singing along to lines
like “Load up the drugs we'll let the demons come in / Bring all the kids they
won't know where to begin,” which lead singer Matt Bishop delivers with not even
the slightest hint ofsarcastic
bravado, up until the ELO emulated sound on the chorus. It’s so old, it’s new
again, and it wouldn’t even make a difference if all the songs sounded alike.

ACED Bloggers - Pop Culture Blog What the Flip? Daniel Sargeant - Tuesday, 06 January 2009 MTV has their own little campaign going on for college students right now.
They gave 100 Flip camcorders to 100 college students around the country and told them to get inspired and surprise us with some video footage of their own design.
Different themes guided them, some were open-ended, others were scavenger hunts and others were questions only they could answer.
