Everybody growing up in the 1990s knew Sabrina Spellman—she was the main character of the popular show Sabrina the Teenage Witch about, well, a teenage witch. The show ran for seven seasons and audiences followed her through high school and college before finally ending.
The third season is finally on DVD this month, and there's a lot to be said about it. In this season Sabrina (Melissa Joan Hart) finally gets her witches' license… but she can't use it yet. Before she gets to use her license, she has to uncover the Spellman family secret—and in order to do that she must gather clues from a motley bunch of visiting relatives and friends.
Unfortunately, she doesn't exactly get to put high school on hold in the meantime. At the beginning of the season she is faced with choosing between Harvey (Nate Richert) and her new flame Dashiell (Donald Faison), but even after she decides to stick with Harvey her troubles don't end.
Libby (Jenna Leigh Green) continues to make Sabrina and her best friend Valerie (Lindsay Sloane) miserable, and vies for Harvey's attentions. Sabrina's aunts Hilda (Caroline Rhea) and Zelda (Beth Broderick) are still around to look after her and help her make the right decisions, but there are still rules in the house and they have a lot of limits as to when she can use magic. And of course, Salem (Nick Bakay) will stop at nothing to stir up a good bit of trouble.
The third season of Sabrina might have been the best. The show had hit its stride by then, and wouldn't jump the shark for at least another season. The characters were familiar and weren't about to up and leave (at least, so it seemed) and the aunts were still regulars on the series. Hart is cute as ever in the title role and even if it's more than clear she's no longer a teenager, you're willing to suspend disbelief to watch her.
Richert is great as the oftentimes adorably clueless Harvey and Bakay is fun playing sneaky, manipulative Salem. Sloane is great playing Valerie, who is perhaps my favorite high school character of the season. However, the aunts take the cake. Wacky Hilda and overly logical Zelda have always been the best characters in the series and grounded the show a great deal. If you were ever a fan of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, go ahead, get this DVD. It's always nice to have a little magic handy.
