I had never watched The Third Watch before
viewing the DVD set, but now I"m hooked. The
non-stop action, suspense and intermittent comedy makes for great entertainment. I enjoyed every minute of the heart-pounding
street fights, fire fights and emergency calls.
If you are into police, fire and paramedic drama, this series is worth
the watch.
Set in New York
City, the drama follows the men and women of the third
watch, a time period involving most of the mayhem, from 3 p.m. to 11
p.m. Jumping from police action involving domestic
abuse to robbery and then to murder, the cops and medics of New York
are relentless in their duty. Most, if not all, chapters focus on
partners,
whether it be police or paramedics.
Bosco and Molly are the odd-couple
cops, constantly at each other on subjects ranging from Bosco’s hotheaded
behavior to Molly dealing with her alcoholic husband. The two are not very
lenient on their perps. Rookie Ty and
20-year veteran Sully are the venerable ‘father-son’ pair that have been teamed
together following the death of Sully’s partner. What makes the pair interesting involves
Sully’s past history with Ty’s dad. The
two prowl the street with a more humane outlook on crime.
Heading up the paramedic crews are
Bobby and Kim, staunch and unremitting in their duties, the two caregivers work
hard to save lives. But, both Bobby and
Kim are intertwined with personal problems, not all of which occur during their
off-duty time. ‘Newbe’ paramedic Carlos
gets teamed with long-time, respected veteran Doc who gets the job of teaching
while saving lives. Their constant
disagreements make it tough for the two to bond. Their conflict increases when they both take an
interest in Dr. Lisa Morales (Vidal).
Intertwining within the chapters
are the firefighters of station 55, who are constantly putting out fires and
rescuing lives. The main focus however
is on firefighter Jimmy who is the ex-husband of paramedic Kim. Since they have a child together, and Kim has
been taking interest in her partner, Jimmy’s fondness for gambling and jealousy
adds a lot of drama to the series.
All the actors do a great job of
bringing the stories to life. My
favorites include, Sully, Bobby and Bosco as they seem to create the most drama
within the action. The on and off love
story between Kim and Bobby, although sporadic, does prove to be a realistic
hook for those who have been in their situation.
The bonus features include a
retrospective called The Nights of Camelot, hosted by the creators and cast. It takes you through the beginnings of
the series and how each person was cast.
Don’t forget to check out the very funny gag reel, it’s a great way to
see the real personality of the actors following the last disc.
