And they are effin' awesome. Hailing from London, UK, they can probably be shoe-horned into a number of categories along with other fellow indie/experimental rock deities who've fallen from the richly talented British skies, such as the likes of the Klaxons. But comparisons are boring. It isn't easy to plug these dudes, so why bother?
Hot Chip formed in 2000, and after years of self-releasing records, they signed with Moshi Moshi in 2003. Now signed to EMI in the UK, the band has gained much more mainstream appeal as well as the attention of critics.
They show no signs of slowing down with their third release, Made In The Dark. These lads get it done beautifully. The album is a punch in the gut with an extreme g-force-to-be-reckoned-with on the dance floor. Think comic book ZING! BAM! POP! THWAP! The thumping bass, insane vox, mechanical whirs and robot ticks are seriously mint on the album, which we've come to view as a literal representation of the beating heart of an electro-pop nation.
Although the entire piece serves enough kick to level a small country with its dancing shoes, a few of our favorites come in the package of the melodious as well. "We're Looking For A Lot Of Love" melts us into useless puddles of awe at the funk Hot Chip dare to lay at our whimpering feet. On the title "Made In The Dark" and "In The Privacy of Our Love", they remind of us of that high school sweetheart's indie rock serenade about perpetual togetherness bred from such perfect compatibility. Is it possible for an album to be so in sync with its individuality? Hot Chip seems to have made it so.
Although they are currently touring Europe, they are set ready to unleash their awesomeness on the States in April. Made In The Dark is out now, get it.
