Stephen Collins (David Morrissey) is an ambitious politician. Cal McAffrey (John Simm) is a
well-respected investigative journalist and Stephen's ex-campaign
manager. En route to work one morning, Stephen's research assistant
mysteriously falls to her death in the London Underground. It's not
long before revelations of their affair hit the headlines.
Meanwhile, a
suspected teenage drug dealer is found shot dead. These (apparently
unconnected) events expose a dangerous habit within modern government
of dancing too closely with the corporate devil. Friendships are tested
and lives are put on the line as an intricate web of lies unfolds.
DVD Features:
Commentary with Paul Abbott and David Yates
Commentary with Hilary Bevan Jones, Mark Day and David Yates
Critique:
This whirlwind drama will have you bumping and grinding in all possible
directions as you try to put all of the puzzle pieces in place together
with McAffrey and his team of investigative journalists. These
characters bring it on hot and heavy as they chase down leads, corner
criminals and expose secrets. They are always one step ahead of the
police, making coin-turning decisions at the drop of a hat.
Its cast is superior. The story is tight. The stakes are high.
State of Play is a bundle of suspense, shady realism and human frailty. Of all the recent mini-series on the tele, this one is tops. Someone should make a proper series out of this!
Who cares about the features (although the commentary with Abbott and Yates on disc one is actually well worth a spin), because the progression of this production is simply stimulating all by itself. James McAvoy, Bill Nighy, Kelly Macdonald, David Morrissey, John Simm— these are just a few of the fabulous actors that round out the flawless talent in State of Play. Not one actor had a hair out of place.
Final Analysis: A first-rate crime drama with revealing, dynamic characters and a solid story. Great for anyone looking for more in a television mini-series.

They gave 100 Flip camcorders to 100 college students around the country and told them to get inspired and surprise us with some video footage of their own design.
Different themes guided them, some were open-ended, others were scavenger hunts and others were questions only they could answer.
