The Boy and His Race Car
a short story by: Lisette Marie Gómez, Puerto Rico

Jacob was a special boy who could not walk. He didn’t let that get to him, though. He believed that one day he would move his legs and become a race car driver.

On his tenth birthday he got a toy race car. It was red with bright yellow colors that made it stand out. It was a wind up car and something about this car brought hope to Jacob’s life. Jacob would wind up the car and watch it race. He put his hands up pretending to hold the wheel. "Vroom, Vroom," he said.

Jacob decided to write a letter to Dr. Powter explaining how much he wished to walk. His family couldn’t afford the operation and would he help him? Jacob waited and waited but his letter was not answered. He was sad. Seeing the race car really upset him, so he put it away in his toy box.

One day, Dr. Powter came to the door and agreed to help Jacob. While Jacob was recovering at the hospital, his aunt took his toy box and gave it to the orphanage. Long before Dr. Powter took on his case, Jacob had asked his aunt to donate his toy box. Of course, he had forgotten that he told her to do so and he'd forgotten that he had put his race car in it. So, when Jacob came home still weak and in his wheel chair, he tried to find his race car. Jacob was devastated when his aunt reminded him of his wishes. He knew his race car was gone forever.

At the orphanage a boy took the race car and played with it down a hill. He played with it all day and then left it there. Over time, its colors faded. A toy maker passed by and found the race car. He took it and fixed it up. He painted it with the brightest colors - red and yellow – and placed it in the window for sale.

A girl came to his store one day and saw the race car. "That would be a perfect gift for her friend," she thought. Her friend loved race cars and it would be his birthday soon. She bought it and asked the toy maker to put her friend's name on it.

On Jacob’s eleventh birthday he opened his gifts. He was polite and thanked everyone. His heart just wasn’t into the party though. Finally it was time to open the last gift. He untied the ribbon and took off the lid. He starred in disbelief. There in the box was his race car, and it was better than before. His name had been painted in bright yellow on the top. He was so excited. He quickly wound it up and watched it run. His dream of becoming a race car drive came rushing back to him. He was so happy.

Before he knew it he was on his feet. There were all these strange feelings that had him moving like he had never moved before. He slowly took a step and started to walk. He started out very slow, unsure of his steps. Jacob began to move faster and faster until he was running. It felt great and he was running beside his race car. It was a miracle!

Ten years later Jacob’s dream came true. He now races in NASCAR with a bright red and yellow race car.
