"We are going to be doing a gig in Miami December 1-5. We're teaming up with Moritz Waldemeyer and Fendi, so in a week or so we are going to have laser guitars. It is going to be awesome and we are going to be down in Miami performing and showing off the guitars," says OK Go's Tim Nordwind (bass). The lasers shooting from the guitars sounded kinda cool. "I think the lasers come out of the head stock and it is something we can kind of program to make all sorts of designs. If I understand it right, I think you can program it to work with the music you are playing on it. We haven't actually got them yet so it is hard for me to explain them." On to more WTF conversation. "The WTF video was inspired when I ran into a friend of mine in LA and we worked with the video designers in a Hollywood style to try and get some fun ideas and make fun. Tim Nackashi had some great ideas about what to use in the video. He thought we could do something great with the basic idea of using picture trailers. We put the whole thing together in about three days. It was pretty simple and cheap and a great idea from Tim."Which songs does he like off the new album? "There is a song on the album called 'All is not Lost', which has a video we will be making soon, but I like it because it is kind of like Prince doing a rock 'n' roll song. It has a real up beat feel to it with a bit of calm melancholy. "There is also another song called 'Skyscrapers' which I think is really nice. It is sort of a slow, groovy song. It is about trying to believe in something even if you don't want to. I didn't pick the name for this song, but I think they chose it because there are things in life that seem too unbelievable to even exist, sort of like the skyscrapers when they were an idea no one thought possible to create until someone tried. That is what the song is about, because often times in life what you want to believe in seems impossible, but there is comfort in knowing that sometimes you can make the impossible come true. "I think everyone feels, at some points in their lives, that we are all doomed, and we all deal with that differently. Everyone needs something to believe in and get them out of ruts. For me, the arts or writing, help get me out ... anything to get your mind off of the issue. Truly I probably feel that way more often than I should. "I want to see the movie 2012 because I kind of feel like that is the way the world is going to be when it ends. I could have went to see it the other night, but I chose to see The Fabulous Mr. Fox instead." The holidays are always something special and fun for Tim. "For Thanksgiving ... A few years ago we played a show at Thanksgiving. It is kind of funny because that show actually led up to this Miami show. We had been given some extra money at the end of the show to do something different and we contacted Waldemeyer and he designed some light-up jackets for us with LEDs that made designs on the back that eventually said Ok Go. So that was how we met Waldemeyer, and now two years later we are going to make laser guitars with him. "But back to Thanksgiving, some years we are together and some years we are not. This year we spread out to see our families. I saw my Dad. We have spent a lot of holidays together though [as a band], especially when albums are out because we are often touring around the holidays." Early 2010 Ok Go will be embarking on a tour. "We leave around January 10 and spend the month of January touring around the UK and Europe. I am really looking forward to that as we have not done a lot of touring on that side of the pond for a while. Music is looked at a little bit differently in Europe. It is more embedded in their culture over their as compared to the way our young people look at it here in the United States. It is a great and different experience over there. It feels like fewer kids over there want to stay home and play video games. They are passionate about their music and want to go out and see it." Touring isn't all they will be doing in 2010. "We are going to shoot another video in February for 'This Too Shall Pass' when we come back to Los Angeles, and then after that we are going to tour the United States. I can't say much more than that about the video, but it will be dangerous and awesome and we are working with some scientist friends of ours." How will that American tour play out exactly? "I think once we start touring in February it will be an all-encompassing North American tour including some of Canada. We actually look like we are sponsored by Apple as we all have our laptops and iPods with us. We are kind of Mac nerds. We use our computers a lot to find the good places to go, especially to eat wherever we are, instead of just hitting the fast food places." These guys are internet-inclined too. "I have my own personal Twitter account, and the band has its own account, and I am often twittering with my phone. We use a lot of the social networking sites. My personal one is not private, and if you look for Timothy Nordwind on there I think you will find it." What was the process behind the latest album? "The entire process of getting this album out was both fun and challenging. For our second album we toured on it for two and a half years, which was a really long time to tour on a record, and when we got done we were really burnt out, but we really wanted to get going on a new record because it had been so long. "We wanted to write so much, but we really had to force ourselves to take time off because what we were writing was really uninspired. We really needed to get ourselves into a fresh state of mind where we could write things that felt new to us. That was really tough, and took about six to eight months to really get back to earth from all the touring we had done. We had a lot of personal and emotional stuff to deal with once we got home too, so we had to do our own personal spring cleaning to repair what needed to be fixed. "After about eight months we felt happy in our heads again and were able to start writing again. Then we ended up writing about a hundred songs for this record, and then the challenge was how to whittle them down to 20 to bring to the studio. That took some time, and then we ended up recording 15 of the 20. The other songs will be kind of shelved and used in the next album. "We could have put out two albums with all the songs we wrote if we would have had the time and money to do it. I think if we do about a year of touring for this album we could easily step back into the studio and pound out another album. It will make getting back into the studio fun because we know we have stuff sitting there waiting for us to work on. That was part of the problem this last time, because we did not have anything to start with and draw on, and this time we do."
